has anyone some nice showcases to link?

DM idiots believe in their list of importance as "List, Offer, Creative," so I really doubt it.
When I worked in DM, I was actually told that certain things looked too good, to make them uglier. People buy ugly.

Who told you that people buy ugly? I've designed hundred of DM pieces and nobody's come up with such a response.
In any case, you always have to stick to corporate guidelines, unless your client is MediaMrket and then, yes, you have to design ugly.

At least 15 people with 20+ years in DM said people buy ugly. I'm not saying they're right, actually i'm calling them douchebags, but that is the prevelant attitude in lots of DM.

where to buy nice?

what's wrong with saying that people buy ugly? it isn't always true, but certainly is in some cases. some brands are all about dumbing down to the consumer's level of expectation, it can engender trust to buy in some.

harlequino,
I'm inclined to believe them. I doubt they would do something that doesn't work.

Yeah i know. My only point is how hard it is to produce "nice" or good work in that area, because the marketers or clients are the classic "make the logo bigger" types. That site with the bigger logo cream is dead on. Starbursts and crap everywhere. And I understand WHY, just saying it sucks. It's why I got out of dm altogether.
On the OTHER hand. Last year I did get to design and write copy for a big direct mail piece for a major auto company. Was very happy with it, and it got a big ROI. But it's rare, unfortunately. At least, in my experience.
