If you come to Boston with any sort of Yankees attire, we can't guarantee your safety.
I love Boston...good quality of life. It's not NYC though.

I like Boston BECAUSE it's not NYC.

Boston is a great city to live in – worlds beyond New York I think in terms of liveable.
The city itself caters a lot to walking. Easy to walk across town and enjoyable. Lots of green throughout and a well-kept park. with the Dig, the highway has come down and the new garden and public areas being built there seem really promising – worlds of difference from before.
There is the full array of businesses that you would find in other large cities, but its not overwhelming in terms of competition for finding it.
The weather is great is you like the new-england temperate seasons.
You're situated on the water. The harbor is beautiful as you get out to the inner-harbor and outer-harbor islands. As well, you can jump on a boat that takes you from downtown to the airport in minutes (though there is the silver line now).
Good bar seen. Certainly attractive folks to be found. though that being said, it can be a bit conservative.
One of the nice things about Boston is that its kind of parochial, but with a soul. There are customs regarding the way people interact and communicate in public, pass on the street – things that honestly you don't find in a lot of american cities.
You've got a much better proximity to the outdoors than NY. Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire are all a short drive away and you dont have to deal with the 1.5/2 hours to get out of the city. The Cape (my home stomping ground) is nearby and during the off-season cant be beat for visiting the beaches, doing some kayaking or fishing, or just hitting the drive-in.
Good food in Boston. Certainly NY has the upper hand there, given sheer numbers, but compared to lots of other american cities, Boston has a great variety and quality.
And of course... We got the Sox!

one of the best. seriously. letters spells it out very well. personally, i love the south-end and would live in that part if i were there. great dining, great stuff, great 'hoods
"are the girls hot?"
what are you- 17?? lol yes, they are teh most hottest.
"what the dilly?"
great city, great place to live, MA has great policies as a state and the creative scene is hoppen.

We should also add though that Boston is considered by many to be one of the most expensive cities to live in. If you're coming from NY, I think they are similar. Rent can be high (though I still think NY and SF are higher generally) and taxes are high in MA. That being said, it depends a lot on whether you are renting or buying and where.
Like madirish said, the south End is a great neighborhood to live in. As well, the Fort Point Channel area is being developed and is situated in good proximity to everything (lots of old industrial brick buildings being renovated). Property values there are doubling from 5 years ago. There are lots of worthwhile areas to live.

Yeah, they're surrounding Fenway with luxury condos, it's totally awesome.
