Hi,
I wonder if anybody can advise me. I am wanting to get some 3D software so that I can create 3D letters.
I have try Photoshop and Illustrator, but they just don't hit the mark.
I just need something simple, as I have no need for Pixar magic.

I used illy for 3d letters and I was quite happy with it..

simple + 3D programs dont usually go together...
How is illustrator not working for you? are you looking to create something and spin it around or something?
Look into Maya...that's all I can think of. or if PowerCADD is still around there is a 3D extension...all free I believe.

(Oct 24 07, 06:21)i know, but if all thats necessary are are the basic shapes...then you can always play around in photoshop or something. I've seen some pretty good architectural renders based on simple sketchup output then finished off in ps...

good luck!

Hi,
Illustrator doesn' t seem to give me the shading, but I guess I could try that in Photoshop.
I am trying to create something like:
Simple.
Thanks tho

There is a 3D plugin or two for PS. Search around the Adobe third party plugin section.

Meeko, thanks!
Do you have a link for illy?
- menos0
yeah..that's not as simple as you make it sound... you need lighting and some way to get a nice material finish...
which is why illy doens't satisfy you enough...

NuBoy, glad I can help!
Brooke is awesome. So thanks to her.Illy = Illustrator
Put any object on your desk and move your desk lamp around it, imitate its light and shadow to make it more realistic, you will have to do it by hand on illustrator, on a 3D app is made automatic with light positioning.
But it can be done

I've done 3D type in sketchup before and also in illustrator.
I've done a quick example for you recreating the type in the david and goliath link. I did it in illustrator extruded and angled the type using the 3D tool. Then added some shadow and lightlights in photoshop. Took about 15 minutes. No need for 3D software really:
