Childhood Design Memories

Looking back at my childhood I can think of various memories that point to my eventually becoming a designer. Sort of stupid - but i keep remembering this stuff, and where else am I going to share it?
I can remember when I was first learning to read, I was looking at a store's signage. I wanted to go back to not being able to read it, to just go back to being able to look at the forms of the letters. This was at 5 or 6.
I also remember being able to do block lettering by hand and being complimented on it by my art teacher.
And finally, the oddest one. We had to create valentines, and I think there was going to be a contest for the best valentine. This was probably first grade or so. Anyhow, at this point I had this idea in my head that I would create the best valentine and somehow I would receive the accolades of everyone for creating the best valentine ever or something. Rather gay now that I think about it.
Anyone else?

"Rather gay now that I think about it."

(Oct 19 07, 06:38)no, my first memory is having a gun rack in my crib - but I didn't think that was worth mentioning

I became a designer cuz my art teacher told me i sucked and when I saw her at my high school reunion and told her what i did, she laughed. I showed her my biz card and she changed her tune and had a million questions - in your face bitch!
Wait. What?

You invented Valentines day?!

we created Valentines (as in valentine cards), not the day.

i remember wanting to do SOMETHING in the art field...but not sure what...just knew i was good at art class, and also had no desire to be middle aged and selling paintings of a beach scene in a mall....
so along came a business class in grade 9 of highschool...we get shown a documentary about chiat day...all about the making of the 1984 spot.., along with some other ads they did...
what my impressionable young mind saw was a bunch of crazy looking hippy types smoking at work and dreaming up wacky shit and getting paid for it..ok...i thought...thats gonna be me ..
spent the rest of highschool doing everything to work towards that...
but that moment, at, what ...age 14...that was the clincher...
knew i what i was going to do with my life from that moment..:)

only reason I ended up being a designer was because I really wanted to be involved in a form of art that utilized a computer. My first choice was landscape architecture, but the waiting list was like a year before I could even get into the program. Then I thought "Fuck it, I'll be an illustration major" because that's all I did as a kid was draw, draw and draw some more. But once I saw the computers in the computer lab and saw all these people doing design work I said "that's it, I'm going to be a design major". I like the industry; hate the work I do... go figure.

I guess the point of my rant is that I don't really have any "design" memories really, but I was actually destined to be an illustrator.
This is something I know, yet I still have yet to move on it. I guess I need to figure out how to make money as an illustrator. My pen work is OK, my realistic work sucks, and my painting is mediocre. where do I go with that? abstract comic art? I would really need to just work at it again; get back on the bike. Problem is trying to find time to illustrate when I'm usually doing freelance design work to support the fam and pay the bills. fuck... I never even did my NTPE from a year ago.
damn you planet01 for bringing up old shit.

been obsessed/passionate about letter forms, visuals and what i know know is geometric abstraction and color theory, for as long as i can remember.
ALWAYS been something i noticed/cared more about/casually studied more than content, words, or ever speach. nothing else ever did it for me.
in fact, i can distincly remember failing the first 'term paper' i had to write in like 4/5th grade because i never wrote it at all- i spent all the time laying it out and going between these two typewriters at my house who had slightly diffeent typefaces. my arents were pissed..... for about 30 seconds. ;)

(Oct 19 07, 09:59)ha ha - wasn't by intention to drudge up bad stuff. you're probably just still on the way to your eventual career.
ever seen this site - a lot of interesting illustration work featured here. fecalface.com (it's not what is sounds like - i promise)
