how do you round corners to a shape made with the pen tool in PS.....i hope i'm being stupid.....

you have to either:
a. do it the old fashioned way and draw the rounded corners yourself.
or b. use the rounded rectangle shape tool and edit the path from there.

draw a square/rectangle with the vector tool.select the 'add anchor point' tool, and add anchor points to each side of your square.
select the 'delete anchor point' tool, and remove the anchors points on all 4 edges. this should create sharp or slightly distorted angles on each end of the square.
now use the 'convert point' tool and drag one or both of the anchor points created to round out the corners of your squaretangle...

draw them in illustrator where you have more vector control... copy and paste them as paths... done.
