+ go on a trip by train (especially sleepertrains!), an experience of a lifetime!
+ go to the Taj at dawn (before most of the tourists), the park will be mostly empty and you will see the monkeys fleeing out before everyone barges in. And the sunrise will set the Taj in the most beautifull colors.
+ go to Chang Mai, a really beautiful city.
+ don't even try to see the whole of India in one trip. (We traveled through the north and a piece of Nepal and were exhausted afterwards)
- haha.. Chang Mai is Thailand, it's still early hereneverblink
- haha i caught that!Tara

my friends are only going for 2 weeks and i want to go hang on a beach for a bit before that and then travel with them. do you think it's safe me to go on my own and hang on a beach for a few weeks?

Yes and no.. it depends a bit on where you're going and your personality. Don't be intimidated, the people there know little of 'personal space' and will probably stare at you.
The beaches (most famous are Goa or near Mumbai) attract a lot of tourists and therefor will also attract more, er, people with bad intentions. In my opinion; if you have no experience in traveling by yourself India is not the best place to start.

Agreed. Especially if you're a woman.

don't listen to them Tara. It's totally cool for a chick to be travelling alone in places like that. I met loadsa women when i was there - i even met American chicks travelling alone up into Afghanistan.
Yeah you'll get the ogling from the guys, but those guys are pussies. One stern look and they run off. Just be independent, assertive and intelligent about your situation and you'll be FINE.
Obviously you wanna be more crowded places, with people you trust, not alone at night time in some dark lit alley etc... but this can go for anywhere. Just be smart about.
Enjoy it - and stay the fuck away from fucking GOA. Heh... no seriously >:-(

I saw a news report about how the Dalits were treated in India .. especially the Dalit women ... made me sick.

Tara, if you're looking for water/beaches etc...from what i've heard, Goa is the place for that...my brother-in-law's ex is Goan, and i from what i've heard it's a beach-party paradise...
my wife's family is from Kerala, and that apparently has some wonderful beaches as well...this should give you an idea.. http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=…
