All depends ofcourse on what your dad will shoot with his camera. If he likes to picture 'wildlife' you will likely need bigger zooms. Unless you want to carry a tripod around everywhere, you will need vibration reduction. For Canon/Nikon that will require you to fork out the big bucks. Budget-wise a camera with inbody vibration reduction/image stabiliser is very interesting... Olympus e510, Pentax K10d or the bargain Pentax K100d Super, or even the Sony A100 Alpha... try to look outside the Canon/Nikon box as well.

Yeah, I should say "refurbished" as opposed to used or second hand. Definitely get the warranty.

Ripper:
Did they torture you?
Mandrake:
Ah... yes, they did. I was tortured by the Japanese, Jack, if you must know. Not a pretty story.
Ripper:
Well what happened?
Mandrake:
Oh... well... I don't know, Jack. Difficult to think of under these conditions. But, well, what happened was they got me on the old Rangoon HNRR railway. I was laying train mines for the bloody Japanese puff puffs.
Ripper:
No, I mean when they tortured you, did you talk?
Mandrake:
Ah, oh no, I ah... I don't think they wanted me to talk, really. I don't think they wanted me to say anything. It was just their way of having... a bit of fun, the swines. Strange thing is they make such bloody good cameras.

(Oct 2 07, 07:27)Are you nuts? Of course it will be good!
The D300 had me toying with the idea of buying Nikon but alas I have too much money sunk into my canon lenses and with a baby on the way its just not possible.

thanks for all the advice.
I'll look outside the box of Nikon and Canon. I am guessing anything in those price ranges will be pretty nice, just a question of personal preferences.
