Is there anyway to have Indesign set up so on startup it does not automatically hyphenate words and put all measurements in Pica's, etc?

Not sure but its a good question.
I think if you don't have any document open and change preferences (for measurements, say) that thats a global change and should remain the same when you open new documents.
Dunno about the hypenation though, I normally just change this is the style sheets.

yeah, mine opens in a different measurement, but the hyphenation thing stumps me and annoys the hell out of me every time...

in quark it used to be that if you set all your preferences when yiou had no document open it would make them default, not sure if it's the same in indesign

Advanced trick:
Open the "Information" palette, click on the + symbol on the left and select your measurement, this will change all measurements in the application...
