Just posted an ad for my laptop computer on craigslist. I just realized I'm gonna feel a little nervous handing over my $1000+ machine and getting a cashier's check from a stranger in return. Is it normal to ask for a money order or Paypal payment instead, or am I just being paranoid here?

don't ever.. i repeat EVER send it in the mail before you have the money in your own hands, as it green smelly bills you can see.
paypal is shit btw, don't bother.

if you're nervous, they shouldn't mind accompanying you to the bank for the deposit :D

paypal have done me in a few times now. I wish google checkout would get a bit more wide spread. Cash is best, used notes, no like serials!

What v6 said. And local is your best bet. I had various people attempt to purchase my camera, which was less than half that price, and I kept corresponding with a scam artist only to foil him/her by the end.

Paypal is totally fine, but mainly for the buyer. There's isn't as much seller protection. But it's still better than anything else, except cash.

Cash is king! If the someone wants to buy your laptop then you control the how they pay. So get cash or go to their bank and get a check from someone at the bank with money from the buyers bank account.
I sold my car and I didn't give the car over to the new buyer until the check they gave me cleared and the funds were in my bank account.
Also, write up a bill of sale.
