I was thinking to myself on the way home last night about re-learning online design, web design etc.

I started out online and moved towards print a few years ago, have pretty much left online behind since.

Now it seems that there may be more money to be made in online when compared to offline, especially in London. I know a enough to get my head around some things like CSS and a small bit of Flash.

How realistic is it to learn the skills to pay teh bills? What are the common skillsets that would be required to get some work going? How long would this pipedream take?

    thanks,
    your pal

honestly, you dont need to learn shit. just start directing web projects and you can bank in on all the cash the web draws in.

    that's my perspective from NYC.

If you want to get in and take care of entire sites yourself, learn PHP + mySQL, practice your css skills, read up on XHTML standards, and maybe get a flash refresher.

There is a good amount of work out there for designers that only comp layouts in PSD and pass them on to coders. If your skills are really strongest in design and visuals I would pursue that angle.

I believe that in this day and age, anyone calling themselves a graphic designer had better be well versed in all mediums.
You can certainly specialize and excel in one discipline vs another, but you need to know the ropes of every form of visual communication.
There are just too many designers out there who can do it all, so if you want to stay competitive and marketable in the job hunting world, you should always strive to expand your toolbox.
    Couldn't hurt right?
