Illustrator File Size

I am having problems with file size.
Without images, the file is 187kb. I had 13 images, for a total of 5.67mbs, save the file (embedded), and it is 107mb!!
I've tried copying and pasting into a new file a few times, no luck.
I've ran into this once in a while before, but never something that making a new file would not solve.
Any ideas?
Does CS 3 take care of that (I've only been using CS 2 for a few months now and so far I really hate it!)
Thanks

embedding files in illy hugely increases files sizes, always has. you can link them without embedding them, which will keep file sizes down, but then you have to make absolutely sure the linked images stay in the same place so the file can find them when opened, which can become a problem when the file leaves your hands.

i just reread your post, i thought you had 13 files of 5.6 mb each...
check your color/resolution settings, that does seem very high.
are you placing rgb images into a cmyk document?

probably 13 jpegs yeah? illustrator uncompresses them and saves at full size.
try relink the images, then embed images via link palette, resave file without "include images" and uncheck PDF compatible.
.zip the file when you're done.
