all joking aside, a drum kit is kind of far too advanced for a 1 year old and would kind of end up being a waste of money despite your best intentions.
you could always get the kid started by recognizing good drumming:

Well I took your comments into consideration on my way to Toys R Us. For a minute I thought maybe something a little less "Drum Kit" but still musical. Then I saw the box with this kid on it:
I'm thinking of bring my Telecaster over so we can jam at her B Day party.

Definitely annoying.
But if the parents have a room the baby could hang out in, it should be fine. However, this usually happens once the child is a bit older. Since it's a baby, they will be around their child most of the time, and the drumming will annoy them.
If I were a parent, I would appreciate your gift though. Learning and/or having fun with musical instruments is great.
