Looking at getting an external harddrive which is well overdue. But i currently have an older model powerbook (not intel) and was wondering that if i upgrade my powerbook in a year or so to an intel one, will the external harddrive still be compatible, or will i have to re-format it for the new intel macbooks? meaning i'd have to back it all up somewhere else before formatting and loading back on.....ie. pain in the arse???

it will work on all macs with a usb or firewire port, regardless of OS or model

but dont hard drives need to be formatted for either FAT32 or NTFS? or is that no longer?
i have an old external hdrive which i needed to partition into each to be able to use on a pc and a mac.

for MAC+PC hard drives, you can use FAT32 or ( Mac Partition + Macdrive for PC : http://www.mediafour.com/product… )

FAT32 has a filesize limit of 4gb.
macs can read from, but not write to NTFS. i've heard macFUSE may enable writing to NTFS, never tried it.
personally all my drives are NTFS and i mount them over the network with SAMBA and read/write is flawless
