Ive got one of these sitting on my desk that ive had for years. Was just reading the packaging 'again' and it made me giggle.
Silly americans!"When NASA first started sending astronauts into space they realised that the ball-point pen would not work at zero gravity.
A million dollar investment and two years of tests resulted in a pen that could write in space, upside down, on almost any surface and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 300 degrees.
When confronted with the same problem, the Russians used a pencil."

I love that story, but I recently heard that it wasn't true (although I still like the sentiment):

..and the same line of thinking led to Cherynobl to I suppose..
"Comrade, this alarming bells are driving me crazed!"
"Here, take this hammer and knock out the alarm! Ha comrade, problem is a solved!"
"Genius comrade! Genius!"
"I know I used to work for great Soviet nuclear submarine fleet - best of world, da?!"

Fisher Space Pen is very popular among GTD/lifehacker type geeks

Aye, also loved the story but alas, not true. Shame a good story liked that is ruined by the truth.

still, in nasa tests, the most reliable piece of hardware on a spaceship was a hammer.
again, might be an urban myth too

(Sep 6 07, 03:43)A hammer is just a lump of metal, what could possibly go wrong?
But I love the idea of two astronauts gently whacking the fuck out of some piece of equipment to get it to work!
- 23kon0
maybe the hammer is for using as a threatening weapon for waving angrily onscreen to the guys at ground control when they are told they will be stuck in space for another howevermany weeks or months as they cant get a shuttle up there to pick them up or yet another thing has gone wrong.
all space travel is lies anyway - we've never even been up there.
*puts fingers in ears*

I recently read some new research into the moon landings it seems there is now definitive proof that they were faked – a really interesting article no matter how skeptical you are:

story is bs, pencilpont breaks and starts to float...
- bolus0
