is there some trick to fixing this problem?
my monitor is set to millions of colors & 32 bit and yet even in a B&W channel layer I get banding ...
I understand that certain colors blended together will cause banding ... but B&W?
is there a specific setting in photoshop under color settings thats causing this

make sure your in 16bit color at least...

To avoid banding on screen and in prints. Add a small amount of noise to your gradient area, then you can add some lil gaussian blur to resmooth.

btw, its not your monitor.

in some cases monitors can cause banding. an easy way to check is to create a gradient with similar colors in the same image. does that one band?
most of the time if you see banding in the sky it's cause the photographer mauled the file in photo shop.

srgb?

yes I'm in sRGB

Is it occuring on an image or gradient you created, or on the original image?

srgb doesn't do well with gradients--adobe rgb seems to have a larger color space

well heres the thing
I do a lot of multi-layered psd work so I get into the habit of creating multiple layers and making one that goes over the top of those and I change the ink effect to color mode and or overlay mode and the banding can get really bad
I know of the other tricks of adding noise and a little guassian blur... I do that all the time ... but thought that maybe
I had some option turned off on my monitor color settingsbut it sounds to me like it happens to everyone
oh and how do you get your psd files to be 16 bit?
that option is always grayed out for me

there is some issues with banding when moving from 8 bit to 10 bit in TV pictures this is called quantization I believe, see if you have changed something in the bit depth thingy you might enjoy better luck there?.....

That might be something model specific.. some dells had the same in early revisions
