When did they become so separate? i.e. two different positions in the workplace?
what design field are you in and how do the two work together where you are?

I think (at least in the US) there is a separation largely because of the role of 'user generated content.' Marketers are hot to squeeze what they can out of that and social networking, so much so that 'interaction' has so much to do with a campaign or site concept, it becomes sort of a separate thing. At least, that is what I am experiencing first hand.
