illustrator/ anchor points !*^@

anyone out there a (semi)genius in the above?
mon problem:
the first image is an illustrator file. the smoke like object is made up out of a gazillion anchor points. the client wants the object working in those tone values on different colour backgrounds.. see the image below to see what happens (the colour green is a random choice).
the client wants this in PS so basically i am trying to end up with the object on a transparent background layer with all the white anchor points transparent /not there. how do i do this!?
i would be v happy if someone could call me stupid and tell me how simple this is to do.

Screen grab, paste in PS - set a new channel layer, select data from R,G or B, paste in new channel, paste on new layer in colour of your choice.

ps. I don't for one minute believe that image was created in Illustrator.
