has anybody here ever taken their old HD from an other Mac and put it into a new HD case and used it as an external HD ?........ my girls computer is fucked and I was wanting to do this so we can at least have that?......

I'd be interested in hearing this too. My ibook died last year, and i have a hd full of stuff I want off :(
- madirish0
yeah dude- it is really easy and will probably last way longer that way, since it will not be in a hot, old fan box anymore.
honestly- just order one fo those cases to do it yourself and it is great. cheap way for a fast firewaire external drive.
- chossy0
cheers dude I have the case bought and everything it looks like a pice of piss to do it, but my main worry is this.
do I just power it up and plug it in and it will mount as an HD with tonnes of stuff on it, I hope so cause like canuck she has loads of stuff she needs to keep?......
- madirish0
well, extract all the data off of it first (whether in new case, or old comp) and then you will need to re-format, install OS, etc to use it as a dumb drive.
as for the extracting; use some software to do this, or pay to have it saved/extracted.

Actually I want to be able to plug the mac HD (maybe in a usb case?) into my PC laptop. If thats possible.
- chossy0
bollocks I've wasted money then :'(
I was hoping that I could just take the hd pop it into a new case and wallop I could mount it as an external drive and all the data would be there for me to drag onto another drive or onto another computer.
- madirish0
LOL
not so easy, chossy. it is still the same drive as before- you can only polish a turd so much... ;)
but honestly- just get Disk Warrior or something and use it in target mode w/ another computer and try and get it all off of there.
canuck- you can do just that after you reformat the drive. just format it for FAT32.
- chossy0
bear in mind that fat32 can only take up to four gig files :/
I FUCKING HATE COMPUTERS >:(
so with disc warrior you would be able to see the data on the new external HD..... wait a minute!!!! the computer won't start up cause the ram slots are fucked but will it work if I hold down T to make it a target drive and I can drag and drop data that way?...... fuck me if that works I could be sucking sausages in Berlin before you can say BRAVO!!!!
- madirish0
hahahahahaha!!
exactly- target mode is a great advantage to UNIX systems- does not rely on RAM at all and is meerly a window to the drive and all data ports on it.
best of luck!

Oh god madirish I hope this shit works if it does I'll send you a lovely painting in the post :D
*man hugs
- madirish0
sometimes a man-hug, is just a man-hug...
;)
seriously best of luck dude. only thing it might be lame about it data-transfer speed if there is something physically wrong with the drive. otherwise, it should be good to go.

i dropped a laptop a year+ ago and needed to get the stuff off the hard drive. i went out and bought one of those cases thing and it worked a treat. what a nifty little gizmo for a few quid!
- chossy0
contradictory
so you simply took the drive from your laptop and put it into a case and mounted it?.......
- chossy0
doesn't work :'(
I have tried connecting the two devices and it won't start up as a drive :( come on madirish if you want that painting.........

idid this this week and worked fine on windoze, s thee a ligt on the caddy? does it flicker when powered up?
- chossy0
Nah the computers totally bust the motherboard or something is fried was going to cost too much to fix.
So I took the hard drive out of the old Imac popped it into a new case and it worked fine no reformatting or extracting with software or anything madirish just put it in a case and plugged it into my other mac :D
Thank you all so much for your help :)
- chossy0
'bump for all the folks that helped me :)
simple just popped it into a nes case like above ^
- madirish0
no way!! awesome!
so let me get this straight; the drive and such was actually fine the whole time, it was just the motherboard and other electronics internal that were of issue??
*falls off rocker
LOL
dammit man!, i could have been much more helpful if i would have understood the issue as that. yeaah- no question. pop that sucker in a case and it should mount up peachy!
sorry about the longer, more complex way round- i just thought the *drive* was messed a little and thus needed to get data offf, etc.
*goes back to Jameson's.... ;)
- chossy0
thank you very much indeed anyway madirish :) without your help I would be nowhere :)
email me your address and I'll post off a charming little acrylic for you :)
