i never online shop for big tickets items in the US.. how's this work then? what % does customs slap on? and do they add GST at the border?

horton, I haven't bought larger items because I don't trust online shopping for stuff like that right now. I may in the future though.
Taxes depend on your province. Mine would be 14%, I'm not sure what yours is.
With smaller items, if it's under $40 or something then no taxes are put on your item. If it's over that amount, you get charged something.
It shouldn't be too much, but it also depends on which shipper you select. Never go with UPS if you're getting something from outside of Canada because they always have higher handling prices. USPS is probably the best bet right now.
Sometimes the seller can say the item actually cost less than $40 on the outside of the package so that you don't have to pay more fees once you receive the item, but you could get fined if someone finds out. And if it's a huge / heavy item it may be obvious that it cost a lot.
