Maybe some of you nerds can help me sort out a weird problem with my home network.
It takes forever to load websites. I type in a URL, it tries to connect for ~20 seconds, loads sloooowly and then BAM - It's there. Now when I'm on the site browsing, it behaves like it should and loads pretty quickly.
When I run iChat, the person I'm talking to gets the messages 10 minutes or so after they're sent.
What gives?
I've ruled out the computer as the speed hogger since I brought home another Mac from my office that does the exact same thing. I've disconnected the router and the switch for a few minutes but to no avail. ISP says there are no problems in the area -- it's been like this for two days now.
What could this be?

Could someone be moochin your wireless signal? If you have wireless that is. If enough people were doing that it could be the cause.

sludge in yer pipe ya mucky pup.

Actually, I just moved into a new house pretty off. I doubt the signal reaches my neighbors. How far does it go?
- jox0
Ha, come sort it out then ya hoor!
- eb60
100 feet in an open field maybe, less with interference.
- jox0
Oh well, in that case no.
- emecks0
you've got a ladyFriend to clean yer pipe now jawks, my days of sludge clearing for you are over!

I don't know, but my network is pretty slow too, but only around peak times. We can't get high speed where I live (in the suburbs) apparently, so I have to live with a mediocre wireless signal.

Does your computer say its getting a good signal?
If so, the problem is happening before the router.
- joyride0
dial up is a bit slower, didn't ya know that?
- jox0
Getting full signal off the airport thingy.
Shut up joyride :P

I would try unplugging the modem for a minute or so. Or reset it if possible.
- jox0
Already did that yesterday. I'm gonna try again though, thanks.

Are you on a Mac? Can you ping/traceroute a site to see how long it takes to ping between nodes?
If it's taking a while to do anything, then ZAM! your site loads quickly, it sounds like a problem with your ISP. I've got this problem each night - requests take 250ms to get through to my ISP then a further 15ms to reach a site. Sadly, in my case, there's fuck-all I can do.
First things first - have you rebooted your router?
- tkmeister0
did you do that last mac os10.4.10 update?
ever since then, i am experiencing bad connection with my wireless. i've given up and now using ethernet cable.
i think the new os update is really buggy with the airport firmware and screw things up. hopefully they will come up with a patch very soon.

What in the hell!! I know what caused it....
So apparently my fiancee has been downloading three different DVD collections at once along with some albums on our 10 mbit line for the past few days.
The wedding is off. Bitch gotta learn.
- Jaline0
ahahaha, I do that too. I seed torrents (to get a higher ratio) and then wonder why everything's so slow.
