thats actually a hand drawn type from a stencil.
If you've done any annotated technical drawings with rotring pens, etc...you will have done some stencilled type.

Hah, I feel so so silly. And it does look like a stencil, the letters aren't even.
Well then, I have been fooled very bad. My skull needs a new brain. Maybe I just looked at the typeface too fast.
In any case, I just bumped this. Does anyone know where I may find a schematic with Futura printed or hand-stenciled?

It's unlikely. Engineers are not likely to use a "designer's font" like Futura.

if you were trying to do the same effect to the type in photoshop, use some futura, blur it then use the dodge and burn tools across the rendered type, thatl make diff edges different
