You have to "cut" the T from each circle individually. So you'll need 2 Ts.
Select both & use your pathfinder palette.

I think he means it's outlined. Like, he created outlines for it.

You'll need to do it for each circle.. ow and characters are usually in a compound mask wich might be causing some problems as well.

yea, the T was from a font, obviously. then i made it an outline, released the compound path as well. i think the solution brooke gave should work. thanks!
