does anyone know of a tree style navigation within a scrollpane like this that is powered by XML too and will work in Flash 8?
The download above is decent but doesnt work in Flash 8 and I dont know where to start turning the code to flash8 lol.
Need the menu to be able to control within the flash movie itself and not just launch external url's.
i noticed theres some on istock, doesnt say if they can control within the movie itself though :(

"The download above is decent but doesnt work in Flash 8"
Well, i just tried it and it works fine for me in versioin 8.
What's the problem - did you publish it for flash player 5 or something?
- 23kon0
honestly?
ive just downloaded and tried it again and its not working when i open it up in flash8 and publish it as flash8 with actionscript 1 or 2.
it DOES work though if you render it out as flash6. but i need it in flash 8 as some of the work on the rest of the project is flash 8. :(

Works fine here too. Flash 8.
There's no reason code should stop working in later versions of Flash - that would defeat the point of bringing out a new Flash player.
Something must be wrong with your publishing settings or your install of Flash 8.

hrm, this is really weird.
i'll give it a try on my machine at home tonight.
think it might be my version of flash playing up like you suggested st33d

it errors out when publishing to flash 8 AS2, and the nesting screws up when publishing to flash 7 or 8 AS1 (using flash 9 on the mac). what you could do is publish it to 6 and then just use loadMovie to load it into your main swf.
also, with that example you can call a function defined in the xml, so it should do what you need to be able to load other swf's internally and not just opening outside url's.

jpea
cheers, that was one of the things i was going to try - loading the menu into another movie.
will give that a try now actually :)
- 23kon0
argh.
well ive got it loading into a movieclip but now the scroller doesnt work on it.
plus ive also had a go at writing the code into the xml to do functions within the flash and absolutely nothing is happening. not very good instructions/tutorial
grr.
*throws computer at wall*

check that the preloader does not refer to _root in any of it's functions, that might be screwing it up.
about writing the code into the xml, I'm not so sure how that would work, would it even parse as code?
- 23kon0
it reckons it allows you to set up functions and trigger them with the xml
beyond me likes. i think im going to have to think of another route to build this lol
- stewart0
23kon, i see what you mean now.
you have to find out how to rewrite "cont_' add cont_name" for as2.
i'm not an expert in this so i can't really help you with this.
it's strange by the way that at the next line it's written like "'cont_' +cont_name"
did you find that line?
it's hidden in here:
library > Flash UI Components > Core assets > xmlParser MOVIECLIP

here, i just uploaded a fixed copy that works in 8 AS2.
- jpea0
oh, and the xml doc parameter just calls a function called my_function on the _root timeline passing a parameter to the function (this could be what swf to load or section to gotoAndPlay or such...)
- jpea0
whoops, guess that broke the 2nd tier of the tree. back to check...
- jpea0
all fixed and reuploaded.

cheers JP. :)
the my_function part still has me stumped.
what im trying to do is ...
ive got that "pageflip" product and i was hoping i could get this xml nav to control the pageturns of the mag.normally youd just create buttons and give them the code
on (release) {
_root.myBook.flipGotoPage(0);
}or GotoPage(1) (2) etc
does it go into the xml something like ...
TREE ACTION="CUSTOM" LINK="my_function:flipGotoPage(0... TARGET="_root.myBook"
if only life was so easy!!!!
theres a copy of "pageflip" in it for you if you can solve my woes lol.

:)
it works!
cheers jpea! thats awesome!
in my head and "in theory" i knew what had to be done but didnt know how to write it. thats what i hate about flash lol.youve saved me a hoor of a lot of time of trial and error in flash.
do you want the pageflip?
you want it at your NT email?
- jpea0
no worries. i used one once upon a time, but ended up rebuilding it anyway so i'll just reuse it if i need it. thanks though :)
