I've only had my 20" dell for about 3 months but the backlight seems to be dimming at the very top and bottom of the screen. Is that normal... and so soon? Or should I get onto dell about it?

can't hurt to check, they have online chat services to ask about that kind of thing on their site.

Dell and Apple use the same LG LCD, so if Dell's display is cheep...
Anyways, not normal, contact dell.
My Service tag is on the lower right of the back, under the vent next to where the cable attaches.

thats why people pay over $1500 for a 21 inch lacie with 98% even illumation
we had 6 year old dell flat screen monitors and 3 apple cinema displays in a room together with the lights off and nothing but an 18% patch up on the screen. you can see huge differences in illumantion from edge to edge. so much worse that others.
normal yes - desired no

"Dell and Apple use the same LG LCD, so if Dell's display is cheep..."
considered cheap

Yes, I know there are screens that are incredibly expensive, I'm not interested in peoples gloating, I just wanted a strait answer. It's just that I've never heard this complaint from anyone with a dell screen before.
- Sickman0
sorry i wasn't trying to gloat. i can't afford a lacie, i just get to work on them.
if you've never heard a complaint it probally 'cause its a very hard thing to notice. and not all screens do it. some dell's look great, some other ones don't.

Oh well. It does seem very noticable to me, it's not a minor thing. To try and put it in perspective, imagine taking rgb 255 white and droping it to about 220 then gradienting it off to full white... thats probably at terrible explination but thats how drastic the darkening is.
I'll still see if I can blag a replacement off of dell...
Which number is the service number..?????
- cacoe0
So... really? Where is the service tag? I don't see anywhere on my sticker that seems to be it...?

have you tried Screen Cleaner Pro? Supposed to re work the gamma of fading monitors...
- cacoe0
I can't see how that could possibly work to be honest because it's the backlit panel that isn't emitting flat even light. It's a physical problem, not something that software could have any control over...
