does anyone know how to have a web app that people can put in data to your site and then have a text message sent to them ?

just like sending email, but you need an sms gateway

it is a contact form builder that also has the option of sending SMS.

not necessarily, but you should have a gateway
there is a way if you know the person number you are going to text as well as their service provider

www.frengo.com does some stuff like that... sign up for a free account and click on my frengo... click on make announcement... fill out the form and you're golden. it will save your contacts so you can hit them all up again if you want

most providers have a way to sms from email, usually the phone number @ provider.net or similar, but not all. a gateway is definitely more reliable and consistent. i would suggest tracking down heavyt, i recall seeing some sms component to one of his supersimple scripts.
also, little known trick, you can sms an email address through a lot of providers. with tmobile for example, if you sms to 500, and put the email address in the first line of the message, it will forward to that address.

off topic, but another funny discovery- i was writing a script to mms pics from my cameraphone to my website, and i discovered that with some providers you can edit your connectiopn settings and change the target script that processes the pic messages. i changed it to hit my server instead and sent about a thousand messages getting the thing working the way i wanted. i expected a ridiculous phone bill, but it turns out that since it never hit the tmobile web server, i was never charged for any of the messages.
