I know this topic's been covered numerous times, but I can't find the right keywords to Find.
for a non-contracted job, what would be your 'default' answer when asked for the source files (PSD/AI)? I did a wee design job for a friend which inflated as I ended up having to work out all their branding etc (their original designer was clearly an incompetent shyster). Now they want the source file of the graphic so they can re-appropriate it for a banner. I don't particularly want to give it to them.
Am I right, or just being a bit of a dick? Can I consider charging?
I hate situations like this - ALWAYS rely on a contract, ALWAYS. Even if it is for 'friends'.

ie. in a non-contracted job, is the default to buy the output (the flattened file I sent to print), or everything?

This is what is my contract:
XXXXXXXXX is selling the above-stated copyright-protected services on a per-instance license. The Client and his agents is NOT granted ownership of the completed work - in any form – but is licensed, upon payment of the agreed-upon fees, to use the completed work in its originally-intended setting. Any reuse of the work, its likeness, or its custom-written code is subject to additional licensing fees at the discretion of XXXXXXXXXX. XXXXXXXXX retains all rights implied by applicable copyright claims on this work
not that is helps because you don't have a contract. But yeah, you should be able to charge them

Do whatever you want, you got the files, they haven't. Do you think they'd even bother asking, for your permission - if they already had the files?

Thanks, guys.
Bullitt - absolutely not! I'm just unsure as to where the copyright ownership lies - I finalised their branding, based upon the schlock that I got from them, but essentially defined it absolutely myself, so I can't work out 'which bit' is mine.
I'll see how they react to a 'small' charge. I suppose the main thing I'm after is to be left alone, unhassled by pifflingness, but not to be left with a bitter taste in my mouth :)

be straight with them. say you feel you spent more time and effort than you first committed yourself to do and would feel better about the situation if they paid for the rights to access that work.

If you got a good friendship and trust with them, then yeah of course, be subtle about it

elegantly simple, _sal.
One would think, anyway - I'm sure it'll come out wrong when I get around to calling them later...
I love it when NT comes through - my thankings to the noble Mr. Joyride, the favourable Mr Bullitt and the delectable Ms. _salisae_.
