when has the US EVER in its entire history since its establishment as a sovereign state, would you say, needed an armed uprising against its democratic government - which you would think as legitimate?

(Apr 19 07, 07:44)Absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence. Maybe the population having guns have kept things in check more than you know.
And just bc we haven't needed it in 200 years doesn't mean we won't in the future.
And until this little brouhaha with this current idiot in the White House trashing the place, most people around the world thought American democracy was pretty spot on.
Think about it.

(Apr 19 07, 07:49)oh and trust me, i think very few people around the world have ever thought American democracy was spot on ;)

Also, how quickly we forget - how Labor (my Dem roots) fought a long hard struggle against organized corporate violence for over a hundred years to gain most of the economic rights we take for granted. You had armed goverment agents (pinkerton guards and such..go read some history) murder and kill Union organizers. It was only real violent front line violence on the strike lines that brought america into the modern age.
Anyway, look..this is going places far outside the scope of the VT shootings and should be moved to a differnet thread or whatever..the VT thing was a pure human tragedy and I don't want to politicize it...

it IS political my man. I'm outraged that a wack job south ko-wean could jsut walk into a gunstore and buy guns, keep the friggin receipts and shoot up a school of learning. And the answers coming from the Right is - LET'S ARM THE STUDENTS!!
- TheBlueOne0
Well the Right are idiots. We should arm the teachers.
:)

excuse me. industrial rioting, civil disobedience and ILLEGAL civillian action is a by-product of capitalism and has been experienced by ALL countries, including those without a right to bear arms clause. And labour movements have won monumental victories in the face of violence in non-gun loving countries too.
That, is a far far cry from a democratic regime legally enshrining EVERY INDIVIDUAL'S right to point at gun in the face of its own democratic legitimacy

ko-wean?

OK, so I present a historical example where the US government sent in an armed militia to put down citizens rights for economic justice, and the citizens responded with armed force and you go off on some marxist capitalist trip..sorry bro...and I come from deep Union roots and fighting for a decent minimum wage and working conditions - which you're apparently taking for granted, as everyone today has bought the whole "free market" crappola that the modern media dishes out - if you want to call that "illegal" whatever...I call it fighting for your rights and using the first amendment to back up your namesake first there.
Sorry man..I am pro-freedom of speech, I am pro-abortion, I am pro net nuetrality, I hate censorship of any kind, but I want the right to have a gun.

"marxist capitalist"
hmm..interesting concept.
- FrdmOfSpch0
no, i;m just pointing out to you that every developed capitaist country in the world has had violent clashes with its labour movement. And none but the Americans have enshrined the right for every INDIVIDUAL to bare arms against it's own govenemrnt
who decides what a legitimate reason is?
I think THAT'S treading dangerous territory and is undemorcratic.
the right to violent uprising against a democratic governmetn is ALWAYS illegal, therefore illegitimate. So the 2nd amendment, to me, seems liek a paradox.

That guy wasn't rebelling against the kids in college he was rebelling against American Nationalism. He used the 'american way' i.e. the gun to make his point. Granted he was obviously not the full shilling and unfortunatley he communicated his anger through violence. He felt detached and stranded by society. The gun gave him a voice.

so what is the plan to ban the guns then?
I want logistics you idealogues. Bonseff has the best plan yet.

(Apr 19 07, 07:00)Here in the Netherlands (even though there is a difference as these were illegal) they had this campaign going on where you could voluntarily hand in our firearm without being arrested, the police even gave out frisbees and other things in exchange, don't remember if money was involved as well. yet this did work, even if you would not believe this in theory..
aaaaaaaaaahh, shite, too long ago, i guess money was involved.. but that would make the US more bankrupt..
so i have no idea.
maybe everyone should melt their guns and make it to one GIANT metal wall around the US, works a charm against terrerrerrism as well!

this is nuts
