Self marketing and promo

How do you guys promote yourselves? Most of my work comes from referrals from other clients but there are a few prospective clients that I'd like to have work from and I just don't have a clue as to how to approach them.
Should i mail them a brochure or postcard? Should I call the marketing director?
Any ideas and thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

If you're after doing some self promo work remember that the first impression makes a huge difference. I always suggest never emailing your CV or any promo materials – rather, send them something they can touch experience in person. If you can afford it, develop a self-promo piece for yourself – if not, send them something that directs them to your portfolio.

Ah...gotta work on the ol' website then. That's another issue too, sometimes i'm just too busy doing that I don't have time to work on my own site and projects. Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it.
