I do a regular interview column called "Anatomy of a Panel" where I pick a scene from a comic and interview everyone involved in creating it - writers, artists, editors, etc.
Here's my interview with the team from the excellent Vertigo book SCALPED:

I've only just started reading comics on a regular basis, and I've got a question:
How are you supposed to read the words in bold? I thought they were supposed to be stressed a bit more than the other words, but sometimes this doesn't work so well.
Am I missing something? Am I supposed to write all the words down and then unscramble them so it tells me my fortune?
- e-pill0
im not sure what you mean by "unscrambling" the words.
why do you need to do that? your question makes no sense, without having a comicbook title or even showing us the said "words"can you break down what you are asking?
- Bleip0
Sorry e-pill, I was just joking about unscrambling. I meant like you'd have a long list of words that you'd then make a sentence out of, like an anagram of words.
Anyway, using this as an example:
I read it as "I couldn't have BEEN more WRONG" with the bold words being stressed a bit more (he sounds a bit whiney in my head).
That's a shit example because in this case it makes sense, but sometimes it's random words like "Yeah..on a one-day visitors pass. THANKS, that's mighty WHITE of you, mr. REPRESENTATIVE..."
Does that make more sense?
- e-pill0
it makes sense, but it doesnt. the art should also help sell the story, and it should also give a sense of the vibe or feel of what is taken place in the image. reading an individual word balloon can yes be confusing if you are just trying to figure out the whole image, but you said you are reading the book... so to me you should have a pretty strong grasp of what is taken place in the art, with the words or without.
does that make sense?
- Bleip0
Yeah it does, and I agree that it's a combination of the art and the words that move the story along. I just thought maybe I was missing some unwritten rule on how to read the written words on the page. Maybe I'm looking into it too deeply.
It's not like it's hindered my enjoyment of comics though, and I've got you and flavorful to thank for getting me into them thanks to all the discussions on the Civil War happenings about this time last year :D
- what are you doing reading... just look at the pictures and keep your mouth shut!53feet

i picked up a few books today and skimmed thru them.
i am rather disappointed with AVENGERS/ INVADERS - the art inside is rather crappy. but the covers are Alex Ross. the story i have yet to read.
Mighty Avengers, again im disappointed, the art is one of the worst i ever seen. i hate that scratchy style. also i couldnt recognise any characters in the story. for a tie-in book this one sucks!!!
Secret Invasion - cover to cover is some of the best art i ever seen.
the battle scenes flow from page to page with a feverous frenzy!!! and the end is something to be stared at!!! WOW!!!!Amazing Spider-man #558 not disappointed at all!!!
Logan #3 final issue triple size!!! again not disappointed as the story is excellent. but the art sucks!!!
whats up with all this suck ass art!?!!? with dope covers...
SECRET INVASION #2 IS MY PICK FOR THIS WEEK!!!!
IF YOU ARE A MARVEL FAN, THEN THIS IS THE BOOK YOU WANT TO READ!!!!:)
- Wolfboy0
So how is the Secret Invasion going in general? Have I got something to look forward to? (I don't read the comics, I wait and buy the trades)
How does it compare to Civil War or House of M?
- its super dope!!!e-pill
- Its really good so far. Lots of twists, cliffhangers, and reveals. Lke it better at issue 2 than HOM or CW.blackfrancis
