itunes sync BS!

Anyone know how to stop the way itunes spends an incredible amount of time syncing an ipod when connected with usb?
My new Nano does that constantly, I've got my girlfriend's video ipod connected right now and after copying songs over it spends a few minutes saying "ipod is syncing" and won't let me sort through tracks or anything.
Now it's doing something called "Determining Gapless Playback information" on her ipod - I don't need to do that!
I don't organize music through itunes, there's nothing to sync?
How do I turn this shit off? My older ipod with firewire never does this to me.

man, transferring songs via usb sucks. my ipod uses firewire and it's blazing fast, this usb stuff is much slower.

its the first one with the grey click wheel.i tink the new ones are usb2,
wich is kinda weird...
