Mac photo archiving, iphoto etc

Can anyone reccommend a prog like iphoto or picassa or something. What I want is something that doesn't duplicate the originals just uses reference points. Also that will update itself as images are moved / changed. The other thing is that as I've uploaded pics from camera over years, the folders are just titled by date. I'd like each folder to be an image of what is within it - to make it easier to see without having to open the folder!
Any ideas?

not sure if it will suit you, but we use iView MediaPro to organise 7 years/20000+ photos (but not all at once) and generate galleries, image edit, batch process, run slideshows etc..

Adobe Lightroom or Apple Aperture should do the trick as well.
