Most specs never tell the weight. How do I know they're light? Is it when the price is above 1K?

I used to own a kona dawg-matic. But sold it last year. I still have an old schwinn mountain bike though which I plan to covert to a single speed.

mostly the more expensive ones have carbon, titanium or scandium frames instead of aluminium ones, they also have lighter forks (SID, FOX F series), and wheels (MAVIC Crossmax, DT SWISS) but believe me, you won't notice much difference between a 13 and 10.5 kilo bike.

buy a heavy bike and lose 10 pounds pedaling it around, there's your weight savings!

I had a Trek 4300 until it was stolen a couple months ago out of our building's basement along with 8 other bikes.
Really need a new one soon, probably going with a Specialized Rockhopper.

my bro rides a new rockhopper. good light bike, and quite racey geometry.

I sat on a Trek 4300 today, had it been in a well discount last year colour, I might've been interested.
The guy insisted 21 was my size. I heard the rule of thumb (or fist, haha) was you should be able to put a fist between your balls and the tubing, while standing wasn't it? I could slide my hand in between on a 21, but not a fist. I am 185cm tall, which I reckon would be around 6"-6"1'.
I guess smaller frame gives some extra mobility, doesn't it?Are disc brakes worth getting?
I'm a noob..

rafalski, you would do good of buying a frame that exactly fits your measurements.
a smaller frame is more nervous and reacts faster. but a larger frame gives you more comfort in general and better stabitlity when going downhill.
try this site for determing your bikes geometry, requires registring but well worth it.

(Apr 2 07, 21:51)I think the better question is why do you have a Dukes of Hazard bike? Does it do the horn sound when you bunny hop?
