anybody got any experience with the phpBB forums/messageboard system?
I've been running one for awhile now and it's started getting really badly hit with spam posts!
I've tried the obvious banning IP addresses of spam posters, but because I'm guessing they are all computer generated anyway... it doesn't seem to be stopping them and I don't have enough time to keep deleting all these stupid posts it's getting!
Any help would be appreciated!

That is the downside of those pre-fab BBs. As far as I know they all end up going that way... lots o spam and I've even had one that was used as an unwitting middleman for sending email spam. :(

registration required to post/reply.
not elegant, but effective

TResudekcrap! :( sorry to be thick, but what do you mean by "pre-fab BBs"... what would be the better alternative? (please don't say 'post-fab' - i know i've left myself wide open for that one!)

Look on the community forums on the phpBb site or google it "phpBB spam filter", etc ...

Is your spam from bots or just bad words? There are bad words filters out there.

MickCheers Mick, i'll have a look. I think its from bots, its a real pain to keep having to moderate these daft posts all the time! :/

cant you set up like a quick hack where a poster has to confirm their entry by clicking an email link that goes to a page with the old 'type the numbers that you see in the distorted graphic' thingies..
I must admit that spaming bots have got far too smart lately :/, especially with like contact form scripts etc..

You can set it so that only registered users can post in the Administration area under Forum Admin, Permissions. Pull the dropdown to "Registered." Click Advanced Mode if you want to restrict even more. Cheers!

i've had a similar problem and noticed that most of the bots enter in an ICQ number for some reason. edit your registration script so that if this value is provided, do not allow them to register. of course remove this field from your HTML template as well ;)
also, doing a preg_match() on certain words in their username, website, signature, etc and blocking if found can eliminate quite a few as well.

cheers all! implimented most of tips people gave in this thread, and all the links were VERY helpful! thanks! woke up this morning to find no new spam posts, where I would usually wake up to at least 6... so fingers crossed!
thanks again :)

I used phpBB for years and eventually bailed due to the amount of spam posts and the fairly tricky upgrade procedures. Switched to SMF and have been trouble free ever since.
SMF has far better protection against spammers the only downside is that there are far fewer good skins available.

look into captcha that might help with the registration.

What about Vanilla? Haven't got any spamming problems so far...

why are there 'spam bots' anyway?! i mean... what's the point, what do they achieve other than annoying the shit out of everyone?!
grrrrr! :/

I wonder if they use them to compete with themselves sorta like red bull creating other drinks to put in competition with themselves like... your getting the same thing but at what cost can you afford?

Is it easy to incorporate any of these packages into just the content area of an existing site? Or would it generally be separate from the site, opened in a new window or something?
