  So, I was thininking of uing this text replacement technique on a new site.

  I have a few questions if someone could help? Can this have a transparent BG i.e over a background image? Is it good?
  What are the pros and cons?

  yes its possible but it will reveal the text it is replacing behind it. you will need to use text indent to move the text an then you could get away with it.
