I have always wanted to finish one of his books because I think I owe it to him and the craft. I've started many of them. It might be that the idea of him is better than the writer.

not the smoothest interviewer, but the author does come across as an interesting fellow.
though, my favorite line of the whole discussion belongs to xenicon: "It might be that the idea of him is better than the writer."

(Mar 21 07, 06:44)That line got me intrigued to learn about this Vollmann character, however, I’m going to wait until I get home to click a link whose title is ... bookslut.
Hahah, nicely worded xenicon.

Of course, was the money decent?
Yeah it was like 20k for one and 30k for the other so it wasn't bad. It took me five or six hours in each case, so I can't complain.
You busted out a screenplay in five or six hours?
Uh huh.
How?
Well, I just cut out all the descriptions pretty much and wherever there was dialogue, I just added some capital letters and colons and it was all set to go.

fucking brilliant.

For the first issue of McSweeney's, in lieu of payment, Vollman asked Dave Eggers to give him two nude female models to body paint for one hour, and some special, hard-to-find bullets for his gun. He excepted no money.
13 Stories 13 Epitaphs is my favorite book of his, although The Rainbow Stories is epic too. Whores for Gloria is a quick read, and I enjoyed it, but it's hard for many people to stomach. The whole book is this guy paying girls to tell him stories and let him cut off parts of their hair, to bring him closer to this prostitute that he loves.

The Tenderloin is in SF and where the prostitution happens.
I remember reading rainbow stories and whores for gloria so long ago and it was like reading a homicidal Ray Carver. He has a weird way of using writing as a method of quantifying experience. He is a maniac writer. Voluminous texts. The Royal Family and some of the other books get overwhelmingly long but there are brutal details that are surgically intense.
He should be considered a great american writer for many different reasons. Kind of like a Denis Johnson combined with Hunter S. Thompson.
