I'm a student who is pretty comfortable at typesetting, but I am intimidated by color; espically when it comes to creating hierachy and depth.
Any Suggestions, or helpful exercises...Thanks

How's your art history?
I ask as I think this is the best place to study and understand color theory. Looking at the works of Titian, Matisse, Caravaggio, Van Gogh, Warhol – the list goes on – all true masters of color.
I also feel that in regards to design practitioners, looking at some of the work/writing of individuals like Armin Hofmann (who used color very sparingly) or Saul Bass – people who's careful use of color may not seem complex but is calculated and exacting.

Hey letters2 thanks for your comment...I do have a little art history under my belt and really enjoy the work of Barrnet Newman, his zips are amazing. I also really like the 60's assemblage stuff from LA- reminds me a bit of dada.
In terms of graphic design, I really like the words and works of Neville Brody. Saul Bass's color choice is so simple yet the depth and intensity achieved, in his posters, is inspiring.
Your work is really nice too, btw.

drop some acid, you'll get a whole new perspective on the subject.
seriously though, learn the color wheel. how it works, how it relates, whats the math behind it, etc. if you can think about it in those terms it might give you a mental picture to use when working with color. does for me anyway.

if you're a student get yourself enrolled in a Color Theory class...
ain't nothing that's gonna teach you color better than mixing pure pigments with your fingers.

You are tottally right there is nothing better than getting your hands dirty.
I don't have a huge problem with theory and the color wheel; In fact when I am using color in larger format pieces I am decent.
Right now, however, I am working on a menu piece;I am trying to add an additional (delicate) layer of depth while keeping in mind the modern, sleek, and trendy feel of the restraunt.
For now I will keep on truckin'
