I graduated last May and don't have anything really from my corporate job to add to my portfolio.
So I plan on keeping stuff from my college port.
My question is:
On my website, should I designate those pieces "college work" or just display it as the companies I used in my designs are real?
For most projects we had to make up company/event names for our posters/logos/annual reports etc.

personally i would specify student work as just that, student work.
if i felt in anyway that you were trying to pass it off as corporate work that would turn me off. it's the talent that's being showcased.

Don't pass them off as real, explain that it was a project and right a quick description describing goals, your thoughts etc... Also, try to include a few "real" pieces just so they know you have experience in dealing with real business situations

buy the domains for all the ficticious companies. Design all the sites and tell them it's real work.

People can smell student work from a mile away. How? Because it is usually more interesting work than you get in the real world.
