I have a video clip that is 720 pixels wide. the important stuff happens in the center of the clip, but there is a gradient in the background that changes. I want the clip to be 950 wide, but leave the stuff happening in the center untouched. Is there some way for me to stretch or repeat the left and right sides outward without editing the center? I don't want to maintain aspect ratio. I just want to stetch the sides of the clip. Some in Final Cut or Motion? Thank you for your help.

If you really don't care about keeping the ratio. Just stretch it to 950 in Motion.

thanks for the response eb6.
what i mean to say is that the content in the center of the screen should remain as is. no stretch, no change in aspect ratio. I need the background to (to the left and right of the main content) to stretch wider to 950.looks like i might just have to key this thing out. :(

Here is a possible AE solution:
Create a new comp based on the needed size.
Dump in your footage, and place accordingly.
Create a new layer below, and either:
A. Make a solid and generate the gradient with Ramp effect
B. Make a new gradient in another app and importThen draw a cicular mask around footage, but feather the edges for blending.
Does that help at all?

The Adobe tutorials for after effects include something like this using the clone tool..
Or you could just make a new comp that is the width you want, dump you current footage into the middle, use CC Repetile to extend the bounds of your footage either side, then use Petes plugins 'smear' effect at the edges to stretch it across..
Mail me if you need further instructions, etc :)

Thanks again for the responses guys.
I actually tried something completely different in the meantime and it works.I created a new QT file with 2 instances of the original movie. The one in back has the width stretched to where I need it, and the one in front just plays normally. merged the two into a new QT. imported to flash. worked pretty well. :)
but I will look into your suggestions as well! thanks.
