i'm buying some special stock for a small print run. 120 x A3 sheets, double sided printing.
my printer tells me he needs 420 sheets as 300 will be wasted in the process. WTF! is this true?

seems like a lot of waste but yeah there will be a degree of waste in setting up.
If I'm not wrong it takes a certain number of sheets to allow for corrections on the press and it can only really be done as the press is running.

can i use cheap stock (newsprint)at the start of the run then, or will paper weight also need to be the same?

I don't think so, the corrections / tweaks that need to be done will obviously depend on the stock used, the inks etc etc...
Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but offset is essentially analogue and as such tweaks cannot be done in a simulation such as is possible with digital (think colour correction etc etc)
