word of mouth has worked for me...
... if you're going to go freelance...
first and foremost:
1.) SAVE FOR YOUR TAXES.
2.) Learn to say 'no'. :)

No, i don't pay to have my portfolio posted anywhere.
In my case, most of my work come from client referrals and word-of-mouth. I tried to pass out as many business cards to potential clients as I can and send my current or former clients holiday cards or something useful.
It's slow in the beginning so don't despair. Be diligent and consistent and try to set a working schedule so you don't procrastinate.
That's my humble advise

There's really just one thing you need to have covered, and the rest will work out - have some clients and connections already. Starting from scratch is never easy.

sweet links.
yes i interviewed @ jwt through aquent.
so NOBODY pays for an online portfolio marketing? i hear alot of talk about creativehotlist and portfolios.com and they both charge.
- scdoody0
I would definitely invest in a Creativehotlist portfolio. It is very cheap and is popular with recruiters / people looking for freelancers.

anybody use portfolio.com?
- dotm0
great links guys..
thank_Yu!

why pay for a portfolio site when you can host your own?
- acedeuce0
obviously most of us have our own portfolio site hosted somewhere.
but has anyone found the "exposure" given to you by sites such as portfolio.com and creativehotlist to be a great benefit?
- acedeuce0
just got a call from Aquent.
I got the job!
- aliceblue0

great... did you already agree on a rate? If not, go for the high end of the range... you've already got the job, don't let them get you down... and they will try
