exactly .. most generalizations stem from a cynical outlook.
imo cynicysm leads to an ugly character.

making and keeping connections is a huge part of it (as CALLES and k0na_an0k) pointed out.
it's all about perseverence. not that you should pester the hell out of people, but keeping your name on their lips is a good thing. that could mean just keeping up on your work — continually making it better, presenting it better, talking about it more clearly/eloquently — or that could mean getting back to people, not waiting for them to get back to you. don't give up, kid.

Ampanderson, I think you hit on a key point. Perseverence! Unfortunately, it is all too easy to fall into the instant gratification trap.
About the school thing: there is just no financial way for me to do it. I am already paying student loans and can't afford to do an $800 per month payment or something similar...
