My Client received a letter from getty images saying that they owed 2000 for images they are using.
The images they are using I got from some image exchange site around 2 years ago and had no clue they were owned by getty.Has anyone else received this letter and how did you deal with it.
By the way it's not a cease and desist order. It says even if you take it down immediately you must pay.
damn... the images weren't even that good

Pay it. I've had clients with the same problem. In their case it was for an older version of their site that wasn't even live at the time they received the letter. They knew the span of which he used the unlicensed image too.

How do they know you didn't buy it? Is there a watermark or something?

They use a company called picscout that scans images for matches then they get the contact info reference it with the database and send out letters and leave it up to the user to sort out if they own it or now.

there have been many cases of getty claiming that an image was 'stolen' from them, when it was legally obtained from another source (ie: same image available from multiple resources).
though getty assumes a guilty-till-proven-innocent approach, fortunately our legal system does not.
