I know a guy who got his macbook motherboard or hard drive replaced 5 times within the applecare warranty

kinda like doing stunts on a motorcycle with no helmet.. if you are lucky you might get away with it..
but chances are thet you won't

I hear that you have the entire 1st year on your existing Apple Care to purchase the upgrade. Ask about it. If that's true, when I get mine in a few weeks I will wait and save the upfront money. If I'm doing well later I'll buy it. If you can afford it I would say go for it now.

it is true..
Ive done it

my local Apple retailer has a deal where if you buy the AppleCare and it doesn't get used, they credit you the full amount towards an instore purchase.
may be similar promos out there?

Ok, cheers. I was thinkin everyone would say dont do it! I guess you all work for apple though! Also, 60gb ipod for 175 refurbished!

There's a clause in the Applecare program that replaces your machine if it takes too long to fix. I was in and out for a month with problems with the machine and the service, so they replaced my PB with the comprable current model. Yay applecare!

(Feb 21 07, 10:44)yeah i guess they figure most people will call and create a claim# for some little issue.. not me though, holding out with no claims and only a few months to go.

I'm typing this on hammered 4 yr old macbook which to date has lost one of the small spongey support things that sit underneath it.
I'm on 3rd ipod though since buying a gen1 all those years ago.
Never had applecare but think it's mighty expensive.

I just bought my MAc book pro, and I bought the apple care without any thoughts. A few hundreds for two years of security, well worth!!

this is sounding like all macs go wrong...tell me that's not the case! I thought they were hardier than pcs?

I plan to sell mine after a year and put the applecare money towards a more current model purchase.
It's not a good time to buy a mac anyway, leopard is expected to be launched in weeks, so most likely will be newer models.
Today's models will be sold cheaper as refurbs.

i got it with my MBP and had to use it within a month.
- Rand0
I got it for my new mac pro because the store will give me an equivalent loaner if it has to go for repairs
- rafalski0
you get 6 months apple care + 6 month regular warranty mayo by default
