Bit of advice please... I've got a Brazilian photographer who wants me to do him a real simple portfolio site...
...But I have absoloutely no idea what to charge, or even a ball park figure?! I don't know what would be expensive or cheap to him... he lives in Santos, Sao Paulo... any ideas guys please? I don't wanna charge very much, as it's a cool job and he's a nice guy... Anyone any experience with design jobs/rates in Brazil ???

Brazilian? Expect lots of hugs, friendly phone calls which might turn confrontational on a dime as the project moves along, and his source material to arrive late. Especially that last one.
Any problems can usually be worked out by consumption of alchol, pot and talking about women's asses...
As for what to charge? Just charge your going rate man...

Dollar to Reais:
1.00 USD
United States Dollars = 2.10574 BRL
Brazil ReaisDo the math...

lol. cheers BlueOne, i'll keep an eye out for all that! :)
...well yeah I would normally charge my going rate, but I was just worried that cheap to me might be like the price of a car to him or vice versa! hmm, toughie :/

RoomFive...
Well, yeah, things ARE cheaper in Brazil, but professional and they know the value of the dollar..
I used to do the wholesale thing out of Brazil for a bit..used to make custom Tees down there for like $3 a pop and then sell them up here for $20...you know the deal..then the US govt laid down the smackdown on import tarriffs on finished cotton goods and it became a hassle to deal with customs week in and week out..I love Brazilians, but they're pretty savy businesswise so never think you're dealing with a poor dumb hick, although they'll play that...and Sao Paulo is one of th e most business savy cities in Brazil..so..
If you dig the guy, price/discount according to the conversion rate...

..oh, and never forget to talk about women's asses...

The fact that he wants someone from a country with a much stronger currency, thus making it a lot more expensive, suggests that he is either
a) An idiot who wants to pay more for something half around the world than what he can get for less around the corner
b) He's got the hots for you.
c) He's gonna rip you off

jox, you're just being a cynnical bastard!!

nah jox, he's a good guy, he's a featured photographer on a surf art & culture website I run, so I kinda know him...
So he wanted to ask me to do him a site before asking anyone else... so i'm flattered and don't wanna charge too much, not that i'm a sap... his work is really great and should be a cool site

TheBlueOnelol. right got it, 'talk about women's asses'... this job is sounding better and better ;)

If if collides with something you'd be able to bill with your normal rate, I say quote him your normal rate.
But if you're just doing it instead of your lying around time - quote him the hours you can help him out for little/no money and just make sure he returns the favor. Favors are sometimes better than dough.
It can involve Brazilian asses...
