Just read that, about fuckin time someone with cash put up a real incentive for people to save this planet we all inhabit, its a shame in a way that it will probably someone gettting a financial reward to do it but fuck it as long as it gets people doing it ; )

first step richard, stop people flying so much.

I'll be interested to see the knock on effects that the solution will have on ecosystems. A case of too little too late, imo.

James Lovelock's idea is interesting - go completely nuclear and put the waste in the rainforests so no fucker ever goes near them again :D wildlife and fauna round Chernoble is flourishing
- vespa0
what do you think the solution is lowimpakt?
- lowimpakt0
hey vespa.
there is no one solution. driving vespas instead of SUV's may be of help.
:)
- vespa0
incentives to ride bikes would be even better
- lowimpakt0
that would help alright.
my job is related to sustaianble consumption and production (policy and practice) - but I take a design perspective on the issue. I'm currently focussed on policy mechanisms for ecodesign and sustainable innovation in small businesses and design education.
- lowimpakt0
i'm not sure why I said that... but my point is, em, I'm not sure. Maybe I mean my job is part of the solution.

so do you think branson's campaign is a cynical way to deflect people away from virgin's environmental crimes?
personally i don't think it's possible to stop people from flying.
the comp seems like a good thing. you should put in an entry!
- vespa0
p.s. what's a policy mechanism?
- lowimpakt0
No i don't think it's a cynical ploy to deflect anything. Everyone know flying contributes somewhat to climate change but we also know that expecting the world to stop flying is unrealistic.
Virgin, like other big corporates such as GE, are diversifying into environmental technologies. They see money in sustainability.

i think it's great. imagine if phillip morris did the same for a cure for cancer! csr stepping up to the plate.
- lowimpakt0
i would describe "policy mechanisms" that transfer public policy (words) into action.
A policy mechanism could be taxation, government intervention ( such as business support), knowledge transfer networks, grants, specific investment packages for education etc etc.
does that make sense?
- blastofv0
private industry will have to drive any real effort to make change, as governments (at least our government) are useless in this regard.
but this is a publicity stunt for Branson, no doubt. this will bring him press and good vibes, but there are dozens of very smart scientists with workable strategies out there already. they don't need financial motivation – they need the political barriers to be lifted so that their ideas can have a chance.
- lowimpakt0
what are the polictical barriers?
the private sector has dragged it's heels for the last few decades on these issues.
- vespa0
heavy stuff. how did you get into that from design lowimpakt?
i went to a lecture a few months ago where hilary cottam was speaking about Transformation Design, sounded really interesting.

This is really great and all, the way to motivate someone is through their pocket usually, but...
"He said if the planet was to survive, it was vital to find a way of getting rid of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide."
Dude, the planet will be fine. It's ALL OF US, who are fucked. Let's be clear about that.
