If you were to desire a 'new' periodical...
... elaborate on what you would prefer to see in its contents.
This would be a design/art magazine such as how/print/CA etc...
... what's missing from the regular magz?... what belongs in a 'new' magazine that would compete w/the above mentioned magz (and the like)...
?

I've never seen a 'web' magazine that focused on design and tech for the web...
... could be loaded w/open source.. tips etc...?
would a web related trade mag make it?

Broader more conceptual articles about interactive work/clients. A healthy portion about Best Practices etc. on the technical end. Good contributing writers like Wired. Leaving the immediate/temporal content to the websites.

Something like Computer Arts, but with some real Flash and After Effects tutorials, not the basic kind of Photoshop/Illustrator stuff we all learn in our first couple of years of experience.

Interesting topic. I too have been contemplating this myself. I think there are a few different niches within the industry that you should think about.
First off you have your Computer Arts kids that buy the magazines because they want to see how their design IDOLS make their work. This is marketed towards a younger crowd obviously. Although I'd be curious to know if these guys are making the most money.
Secondly you have magazines like Print and wallpaper which are pretty vanilla in my opinion. You'd find these magazines in an an agency setting where the work is a little more corporate... not so crazy.
Third you have your over populated culture magazines like XLR8R, Tokion, Swidnle, Metro Pop. Same shit different cover. (I enjoy these magazines)
Then you have your niche magazines like Grafik which are absolutely fantastic haha.
I do read all of these magazines. I am not knocking them in any way but there is a demographic in the industry that should be considered and then the content should aid to that.
I love printed material though. Make a new magazine and make it really good because there is too much shit out there right now.
/end rant

I would like to read about trends in society and how this is reflected in design, music etc...
