Came in this morning to find the fans in my G5 Powermac (Dual Power PC 2 Gig) at full pelt with a black screen.
I've had this happen before and then just restarted without probs but now when I try restarting it boots up but when I try running any software it freezes.
Whats the likely cause of this, hard disk or processor failure? Re-install OSX?

I had this once after I was tarting around with the RAM. Take all ram out and put back in with largest RAM central and any smaller RAM on the outside. Make any sense?

Try shutting it down once in a while. Very similar situation just happened to the intern here.
She hadn't shut down her computer (a 1.6 G5) in about 2 months and finally it said 'fuck you' and the screen started to go black and freeze up.
It's your CPU overheating. If you download a cpu temperature tracker widget I bet money your computer once on again will do the same thing when it hits 152 degrees.
The problem with her computer was 1) she never shut it down which led to 2) her front cooling fan started to work like shit and let the CPU overheat thus shutting down the system.
Open the case up and pull out all fans and blow some canned air into the center to clean them off. Put them back in and hope for the best.
