I have a block of colour 40,0,0,100 in Illy and I have imported a psd from PS with the same colour values and they are placed next to each other. When this file is rasterised in PS the colour block created in Illy looks grey(er) than the one from PS and their is a noticeable difference. the colour spaces are the same. any ideas why this would happen?

cmyk / rgb color spaces

no they are both CMYK, they also look fine next to each other in illy

dont worry, make a pdf and you'll see they are the same, its an onscreen preview thing.
- rasko40
wait - you in illy or ps?
- version30
the working space may be cmyk and the imported psd may be cmyk, but are you sure it's rasterizing to cmyk and not rgb?

im putting it together in illy and then ratserising it to send to the client at low res, this is when you can see the difference. I am also worried that it will (finally) get printed like this as well as the client pointing out the difference

100% its all CMYK :)

try a pdf, see how that looks.

(Jan 25 07, 01:37)appreciate you nudging me to lookout for the obvious :)
- version30
well undo, i don't know what you did wrong :)
i only say that because i just did what you described and i see no discernible difference between the illy box after (or before) rasterization, both match my placed image from photoshop as well

pdf still shows the difference?? :(

thanks v4, im obviously being a muppet here as I picked the colour in PS from the illy color and its coming out 0,0,0,100 ! begeebuz

you have something wrong then.
you could inkdropper the psd black in illy and apply that to your illy box then make your jpg to send for proofing, give you time to sort it out

use adobe bridge to synchronize your colorspace settings.
you have to set both RGB and CMYK for reliable results.for previews to client (jpg, pdf) convert to sRGB IEC colorspace.

thanks v4 and rasko got it sorted

here are my test files, my black psd and an ai with the psd imported and a rasterized and non rasterized box with the same color
