I've got a page with no docutype declaration that works fine. (cross-platform / browser tested too).
I add any declaration and it fucks up. (hidden divs visible, css not behaving in general)
So what what is the default docutype when there is none there? How can I get a page to WC3 validate? Or should I not bother?

no one judges you because you prefer to exercise by doing laps in the mall before the stores are open
it's completely understandable

have you tried the recommedded validation after w3c validation?

generally, if it breaks when you add the DTD, that means you did it wrong.
But, since it is probably too late to fix that, i'd say to use the HTML4 Doctype. It is more forgiving than XHTML1

Thanks heavyt, I went through the thing with a fine toothed comb and found a typo in my CSS that was being missed by not having a proper docutype.
