I'm having an argument with this guy at work. He's our AE animator and keeps insisting on centering my text and making the type 48pt. his point is centered text is easier to read on tv than left justified. did i miss something in my type classes in college that he picked up by not going to college?

hahaha.
Did he by any chance suggested Impact as a font choice?

there has to be a reason why you use it centered, left or right justified. it depends on many factors and just making blanket statements like that irks me. what works in one instance may not in another.

plus i generally find centered text "eh", but that's personal preference

there's a time and place for centred text. i don't know what the design in question is like is so couldn't say but there isn't a rule that i know of saying centred text is easier to read on the telly.
the only basic rules i can think of would be:
-around 24 pt text minimum (depending on font)
-more leading than you would need online
-watch out with super skinny type, anything with really thin lines will buzz

bullshit I use left or right justified text all the time, centered text reminds me of captioning episode after episode of songs of praise!!! so tell him/her to stop being a mo mo.!!
vespa's tips are good.

This might not be applicable anymore but you know there's a safe frame to respect in television right? Some tvs cut off parts of the image.

yep, I agree, thats rubish

Has he ever watched a music video, news interview, Daily Show?

haha chossy, EXACTLY, centred text is perfect for karaoke straps.
and yea of course it must always be within text safe

tell him he is a complete cunt who obviously learnt to design using the AE tutorial then slap him, hard across the back of the head so hard that his Wacom Pad shakes.
What a tosser.

haha, thanks everyone. i am new in my job and he still has animosity for someone telling him what to do that is half his age.
thanks all for the tips & tricks!

goodness me momento the vitriol...
centred type really pushes designers' buttons huh? i'm starting to warm to it! i forsee a new dezine trend...
- vespa0
dude just use your eyes -
play the graphics out on a telly, stand back and check you can read it easily.

vespa, its not centred text that bugs me, its people who say things like 'it MUST be XXpt and it MUST be centred because that is the best way to read it' - yeah if all you do is watch the credits of Coronation Street.
Imagine where we'd be if Kyle Cooper had said that.

(Jan 22 07, 09:53)Well, then everyone would imitate his centered-text masterpieces. Haha!

I'm prolly gonna burn in type hell for setting headlines right-justified in a video I just designed.
- ********0
type on screen should always be right justified and 24 points

on tv with dynamic text?
it actually doesn't matter..
as long it doesn't jitter or flicker.
